Designing and Ordering UL Marks
There are two types of UL services: Type R and Type L. For new clients, your UL project engineer or customer service professional can inform you if the UL Mark for your product is under Type R or L service. If you are an existing client, this information is identified on the authorization page of the Follow-Up Services procedure.
Designing the UL Mark
As shown in the examples below, the UL Mark typically consists of the appropriate UL LISTED, CLASSIFIED or CERTIFIED symbol with the corresponding word, a product identification, a control number consisting of the UL file number or 4 alphanumeric characters for Type R Marks, or an issue, lot, or serial number for Type L Marks. (Recognized Components use a special symbol and marking requirements as described in the UL file.) For additional information on the enhanced UL Certification Marks, please click on “Learn More” at the right side of this page.
A complete description of the required elements of the UL Certification Marks are found at UL Product iQ by entering the UL Category Code Number (CCN) for the product and selecting “Guide Info” on a product page. A UL project engineer or customer service professional can provide the CCN for the product or it will be identified on the authorization page of the Follow-Up Services procedure for an established UL file.
- Type R product types have a UL Mark that use a control number that may be the UL file number for the certified product or a fixed 4 character number associated with a specific UL file number.
- Type L product types have a UL Mark that use an Issue, Lot, or Serial numbers that are assigned during the label ordering process. These numbers may change on a per order basis.
- Additional markings may be required for a UL certified product. You may contact the project engineer for information on required markings for a product, or you may refer to the marking reference in the UL Follow-Up Services procedure.
UL Marks for Type R Product
- Type R product types have a UL Mark that use a control number that may be the UL file number for the certified product or a fixed 4 character number associated with a specific UL file number.
- Manufacturers of UL certified products may submit a copy of their UL Mark layout to a UL Label Center for review and, if it complies, the layout will be accepted and returned. Label reviews for Type R product are required to be submitted using the “Type R Review Request Form“.
- Type R Marks may be printed within a UL authorized manufacturing facility or at a UL Authorized Label Supplier. A copy of the UL stamped layout or a copy of the Mark Page from the Follow-Up Service Procedure must be provided by the UL customer location who is placing the order and shall remain on file with the Authorized Label Supplier.
UL Marks for Type L Product
UL Marks for products under Type L Follow-Up Service and all product categories that require holographic labels are strictly controlled. All orders for these type labels must be processed through a UL Label Center.
There are two types of UL Marks for Type L Product:
- Standard labels – – contain only the required elements of the UL Mark and additionally for some product categories will include a denomination such as feet, pieces, etc. Standard labels are printed and stocked by UL for select product categories. To confirm printing costs for Standard labels contact the Label Center servicing your manufacturing facility. To order Standard labels complete standard label order form at this link. By completing the standard label order form, an email will be automatically sent to the UL label center that will process the order.
- Combination or custom labels – – include the UL file number or Listee’s name in addition to the same basic UL Mark information contained on the standard label and may also include other information as desired by the UL customer. The manufacturer is required to submit a copy of the purchase order and label layout to a UL Label Center for review and processing by completing the following “Combination Label Order request form“. If this is a reorder of a label already authorized by UL then only a copy of the purchase order is needed when completing the “Combination Label Order Request Form”. The purchase order is required to include the name of the UL authorized label supplier, the UL file and volume number, the specific quantity of labels that are being printed, and the company name and address of the authorized manufacturing location that will use the UL labels. Upon successful review of the purchase order and Mark layout, the UL label center will issue an “Authorization To Manufacture UL Mark” to the authorized label supplier with a copy to the manufacturer. This authorization includes a general description of the UL Mark, the specific quantity of labels being ordered, and the UL Issue, Lot or Serial numbers that are required to be used on the UL Marks.
- Terms and conditions – – All label orders and label releases are subject to applicable Terms and Conditions.
Charges associated with orders for Type L UL Marks
- Production Volume ( Also known as service charge) – – applies to many product categories under Type L service for the labels released or used. This charge defrays the cost for conducting periodic inspections at the manufacturing facility. Please contact your regional UL Label Center for additional information regarding the billing structure and specific fees for your product category.
- Manufacturing cost – – only charged when UL’s standard labels are purchased. This charge reimburses UL for the printing costs and storage of these labels. This cost is not billed when combination labels are used since the manufacturer pays the printer directly for the printing and shipping cost of the labels.
- Shipping and handling fees – – invoiced by UL when UL Marks are sent to your manufacturing location directly from a UL Label Center. You may consult your local UL Label Center to identify these charges.
No refunds will be processed after 60 days from the date of the UL order.
